Manufacturing-related 2 yr. / 4 yr. / Graduate Degree programs

Southwest PA has excellent colleges and universities that support manufacturing careers and the development of a highly skilled workforce.

You can enter a variety of technology programs and work toward either a certificate, an associates' degree (2 year degree) or a Bachelor of Science (4 year) degree.

Certificate Progams
Certificate programs (often one year or less) focus on specific technical skills and qualify you for entry level technical positions.

For example, the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) offers a certificate in Basic Electronics which requires only 33 credits (approximately 1 year of study).

Associate in Science (AS) degree programs (2 year programs)
Associate degree programs provide technical skills training such as drafting, electronics, electrical technology as well as more advanced writing and math skills. These programs qualify you for entry level positions as technicians or production planners and schedulers. With work experience an AS degree can qualify you for supervisory positions.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs (4 year programs)
B.S. programs provide advanced technical training and a broader educational background that covers English, writing, higher levels of math, social sciences, and other electives. A BS degree is required for engineering and management positions.

Advanced Degrees
If you are interested in specializing in a particular area, you might want to pursue a Master's degree or perhaps a Doctorate degree if you would like to conduct leading edge research.

The Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as other regional university business schools provide excellent preparation for industrial management positions.

Manufacturing Career Path Flexibility
You can start your education at either the certificate or Associate's degree level, begin working, and then return to college to complete a 4 year degree. Depending on your career choice, you could continue for a Master's or Doctorate degree. Often employers will subsidize an employee's studies through tuition reimbursement programs.

Special agreements (called articulations) between 2 yr. and 4 yr.schools and programs can enable you to smoothly continue your studies without having to repeat classes.

Manufacturing Engineer
PRIME (Partnership for Regional Innovation in Manufacturing Education) promotes an industry-driven curriculum that provides graduates with the relevant skills, education and experience needed by manufacturers.
